Norman La Force for Director, Ward 1,East Bay Regional Park District

I am running because I believe we need to have strong advocates for our parks and open space. We have tremendous challenges and the East Bay Regional Park District needs leaders who can meet those challenges with a passion for the parks.

My passion is saving land for parks, parks for people to enjoy, parks for the preservation of wildlife and habitat.

Park and Open Space Issues

  • Led the Sierra Club’s campaign to create the Eastshore State park and to save the East Bay shoreline.
  • Wrote the Sierra Club plan for the Berkeley Waterfront that saved Berkeley’s shoreline from development.
  • Worked to save the Albany shoreline for park and saved the Emeryville Crescent as wildlife preserve.
  • Led effort to save Breuner Marsh and North Richmond Shoreline
  • Leader in creating the General Plan for the Eastshore State Park, protecting the Meadow and doubling the size of the Point Isabel Dog Park

Expanded Recreational Programs

  • Created Idea for the Gillman Ball fields. This is a tremendous recreational resource for everyone, but especially the youth of Richmond, Albany, El Cerrito, Berkeley, Emeryville, and Richmond.
  • Helped secure more funding for the future Point Pinole Visitor and Educational Center

  • Work on Park District’s Major Management Issues

  • Led the effort to create a resource management and habitat enhancement approach, which the Park District adopted, for the Park District’s Fire Management Program which is now undergoing environment review;
  • Led effort to have Park District develop a grasslands management and monitoring program to address issues of cattle grazing in the Park District so District could better evaluate and manage its grazing program
